From the opening riff on “I Found A New Way,”the lead-off track from Twin Peaks’Wild Onion (out 8/5 on Grand Jury Records), you can smell a new flavor in the Peaks’borscht. The band’s debut Sunken often drew comparisons to more jangly affairs, like fellow Chicago-area crooners the Smith Westerns or Girls, though less heartbroken and more guilefully mischievous. With Wild Onion, they found a new way. Sticky with Stones-y riffage and Jagger-esque howls, “I Found A New Way”represents singer/guitarist Clay Frankel’s expanded involvement in the songwriting on the new record. His other highlights include “Sweet Thing,”“Making Breakfast,”and “Good Lovin’”, rough and tumble rockers, some sensitive, some brash, but all songs we yearn for on this road trip we call life.
