Fancy Hagood Drops His Sophomore Album, American Spirit
October 25, 2024
Today, Fancy Hagood releases the album he first came to Nashville to create: a community-forward project with strong 90’s-country vibes called American Spirit. He also fulfills a longtime dream of joining The Wreckers with his new single “Isn’t That Life” featuring Michelle Branch. Next Monday, October 28, Fancy will put on a special album release show and party at Nashville’s American Legion Post 82, before heading out on the road with Kaitlin Butts next month. Fancy on the new single: “On the night that shit hit the fan in my personal life, I entered into a bit of a downward spiral. I couldn’t sleep and thought maybe writing would help. I was recording everything with my iPhone and a couple days later was listening back to see if there was anything worth chasing. I was so surprised to hear my voice singing ‘Isn’t that life, nothing is perfect, go ahead and cry, just to know you’re alive’ over and over. I didn’t remember singing these words or melodies, and it felt so positive and kind amidst what I was going through. I needed this song and it really jump-started my healing journey.” He continues, “It’s also featuring one of my favorite artists who I grew up loving so much, Michelle Branch. It has been a low-key dream of mine to be a part of The Wreckers, and Michelle made me feel like that dream came true on this song.” American Spirit is brimming with the kind of truth and vulnerability that can only emerge in the company of close, trusted collaborators, with guest vocals from Nickel Creek’s Sean and Sara Watkins, songs produced by John Osborne (Brothers Osborne, Ashley McBryde’s Lindeville), Jarrad K (Ruston Kelly’s Dying Star) and Jeremy Lutitio(Joy Oladokun, Devon Gilfillian), and co-writes with Caitlyn Smith, Mindy Smith, Sean McConnell and Mary Steenburgen. These songs traverse all the complex emotions of being alive, from the delicate love song “Losing Game” and the reflective self-love song “Ever Really Ready” to the bittersweet “Good Grief” and the aptly-titled boot stomper “Through.” This album is a full-circle moment for Fancy, who was initially turned away when he first arrived in Nashville with dreams of becoming an openly queer country artist. Since releasing his 2021 debut full-length Southern Curiosity, he has found himself embraced by Brandi Carlile, who called him an “artist to watch,” and Elton John, who said “We need more people like Fancy.” He has released duets with Kacey Musgraves (“Blue Dream Baby”) and Orville Peck (“Rhinestone Cowboy”), garnered praise everywhere from Rolling Stone to People, and toured with Peck, the Brothers Osborne, Joy Oladokun, Maggie Rose and Josiah & The Bonnevilles. Fancy is also a member of CMT’s 2024 Listen Up Class, and he was nominated for GLAAD’s Outstanding Breakthrough Music Artist Award. American Spirit follows Fancy’s recent 5-song duets EP, Smothered, Covered & Fried, which features collaborations with She Returns From War, Jamie Wyatt, TJ Osborne, The Kentucky Gentlemen and Brooke Eden.
